Atkins is an amazing diet where you will never go hungry again yet still lose weight. This is not a gimmick or the latest fad. The Atkin's Diet has been around for decades. Most people will lose 10-30 pounds in the first month! How do they do it? They eat all the meat, cheese, eggs, and fats (like butter and oils) until they are full. There is no calorie counting or using tasteless low fat foods. There is no starvation. What is the trick you may ask? Limiting carbohydrates in your daily food intake. The amazing thing with following the Atkin's plan, not only can you eat delicious food and feel satisfied, but  you will feel better mentally and physically.  Your energy level will increase, and you may discover that your food cravings have relinquished and the need for comfort foods is no longer necessary.

  • Hello
  • Hello, My name is Mark (MarkE). Today is day 11 of the induction phase for me. This is my first time trying Atkins and so far it has been good. My starting weight was 267lbs. and during the first week I lost 9lbs (258lbs). Today I will weigh in again, I hope to get similar results based upon the facts that my clothes are fitting looser and I dropped down another hole in my belt. Anyhow, I have been lurking and this looks like a great site. I look forward to meeting fellow Atkins followers. Have a happy 4th of July. Mark

  • For those starting Atkin's on 7/7/2008.
  • Welcome and Happy 4th of July! By Monday, the holidays will be over for the ending duration of the summer. So any temptation that you do have should be long gone by now because there will be no holidays to look forward to, unless you're the unlucky person that has to go to a party where all they have is pizza to eat. And if you resist the temptation, then you're a better person than I'll ever be. But of course, I'm sure by that time, our cravings will be long gone and we will be seeing those inches and pounds melting off. Monday will start a new life for us, one that is healthier, more active and most of all, the bonus of losing those few extra pounds that we need gone. So who is with me? Who will start Atkin's on Monday and stick it through for the rest of your life? I've realized so many things after I've began and failed countless number of times. The willingness to lose the weight is there, but the motivation just goes away after a while and to me, that's due to my parents being the way they are. I no longer listen to what they have to say to me because every word out of their mouth is something negative. And as for me, I'm doing this for myself, no one else, not even my parents. Losing weight is a choice and it's something that I want to do. So, I will start a clean induction on Monday and keep at it for 2 weeks to see how much I lose. By the 14th day, I will decide whether or not I stay on extended or if I should go on to OWL. This time we can do it! With the help and motivation and kind words from each other, we will pull through and kick some butt!! Who's with me? We will call each other the Atkinites, yes? Because that's what I was before! =) Stay strong, stay focused and see all of you on Monday for a brand new start!!!! Be sure to post your progress daily, whether it be in a journal, or simply in this forum. I'll be updating it weekly, so we don't get lost in the many posts that we do make. It will have the week starting day on it, and of course the name of our little clan, Atkinites. Can't wait til Monday!!! :dancing1 ~Bekka

  • Here we go...AGAIN
  • Hello everyone! I'm Scott(doubledown11) and my wife is Haley(hmabry). We've both done the Atkins WOL before and been successful, so I expect great things from us. Unfortunately we let life get in the way sometimes and backslide. I'll let my wife speak for herself when she posts later. I've fought weight all my life. Been from an adult high weight of 374 last year to a low of 180 (early 20s on Optifast). And, yes, I've tried all the diets out there. The only thing that consistantly works for me is Atkins, when *I* am consistent. Last oct - this feb I lost from 374 to 318 on Atkins but then had put back on to 348. I considered this a win since I've kept some off. I'm back on the program for a full week now and even though I'm not weighing every day I know I'm between 6 and 8lbs down. I have definately found that carbs and me dont mix after they leave my mouth and travel down:tongue:. I had all my levels checked the day before I started and surprisingly they were boarderline at worst and most were normal. They have gotten worse since 4 yrs ago so now is the time. I'm excited to jump back in and get moving again...slowly so I don't burn out (tend to be all or nothing). So, HAPPY 4th EVERYONE! Enjoy your protien!

  • Roll Call - July 4th!
  • _Independence Day, y'all!_ Day 34 for me. Let's say we get independent from bad food habits, cravings, body fat, and sloth!! Make it a good safe, fun weekend. I'm leaving today for the beach for a week, so I won't be on here every day, but keep up the good work. I plan to be on track.

  • I've stalled for 5 days.
  • sigh I've been on for about 1.5 months, still doing induction type phase, very little carbs if any per day... This past weekend we had a huge party for a family member and had people staying with us the whole weekend and tons of food, etc. I did not cheat, except I drank many drinks on Saturday night (bacardi and diet). My weight has not fluctuated up or down all week....since sunday morning. It really is frustrating because you begin to panic thinking you are doing something wrong. I have even cut back on the diet sodas this week and trying to drink more water. I have been having about 1 bar for breakfast 3 days this past week because we hadn't had a chance to go to the grocery store. any thoughts? tips? sorry if this is in the wrong section.

  • Squats for the arthritic
  • Hello Everyone, I am not entirely sure what a squat is! (big gap in my education). I want to try and strengthen my leg muscles a bit more - does anyone have a link for how to do these exercises safely? I would like to get a bit of practice in and maybe join a challenge next month. All sorts of questions like - do I keep my heels on the ground? may I steady myself with a chair..etc etc. Thanks in advance, Keetje:help:

  • 20 days in, 19 pounds lost
  • Hello, my name is Tina and i started on induction on june 14th and at this moment i am so excited about this. I did feel really bad at first, but it got better. yesterday we went to lincoln, ne and we usually go out to eat like at carlos o kellys (mexican) and I opted not to go out to eat. today at work they gave us rootbeer floats and I had no problem denying one. i am staying on extended induction to get closer to my goal. I have a serious problem though, I absolutely hate all the vegatables I should be having. So, I have had none. I had only had one bowel movement in 14 days, so I took laxative and it worked, but now still the same. I am so worried about the vegatable thing, but I absolutely cannot. My doctor wanted me to take b complex vitamins since i am not eating veggies, but I smelled the pill and there is no way at all i can take it. Maybe if I could do injections of b complex lol anyway, the veggie thing has really got me worried. I am having superb success though and i keep moving forward. i have started doing lots of walking and i love it. any advice from anyone would be so helpful. i love this board, but am shy to post very often. thanks for listening Image: http://tickers.tickerfactory.com/ezt/t/wA5X4ZG/weight.png

Another benefit reported by many Atkiner's is an increased mental alertness. There is no more feeling sleepy after a meal!

  • What happens when you drink a coke.......
  • Good god this is frightening.... http://www.healthbolt.net/2006/12/08/what-happens-to-your-body-if-you-drink-a-coke-right-now/ * *In The First 10 minutes:* 10 teaspoons of sugar hit your system. (100% of your recommended daily intake.) You donÂ’t immediately vomit from the overwhelming sweetness because phosphoric acid cuts the flavor allowing you to keep it down. * *20 minutes:* Your blood sugar spikes, causing an insulin burst. Your liver responds to this by turning any sugar it can get its hands on into fat. (ThereÂ’s plenty of that at this particular moment) * *40 minutes:* Caffeine absorption is complete. Your pupils dilate, your blood pressure rises, as a response your livers dumps more sugar into your bloodstream. The adenosine receptors in your brain are now blocked preventing drowsiness. * *45 minutes:* Your body ups your dopamine production stimulating the pleasure centers of your brain. This is physically the same way heroin works, by the way. * *>60 minutes:* The phosphoric acid binds calcium, magnesium and zinc in your lower intestine, providing a further boost in metabolism. This is compounded by high doses of sugar and artificial sweeteners also increasing the urinary excretion of calcium. * *>60 Minutes:* The caffeineÂ’s diuretic properties come into play. (It makes you have to pee.) It is now assured that youÂ’ll evacuate the bonded calcium, magnesium and zinc that was headed to your bones as well as sodium, electrolyte and water. * *>60 minutes:* As the rave inside of you dies down youÂ’ll start to have a sugar crash. You may become irritable and/or sluggish. YouÂ’ve also now, literally, pissed away all the water that was in the Coke. But not before infusing it with valuable nutrients your body could have used for things like even having the ability to hydrate your system or build strong bones and teeth.

  • Starting Over - :(
  • Well my "clean induction" just got spoiled by my doc. I didn't realize it but I had a GTT scheduled as part of todays office visit (I have hyoglycemia, and it's an annual checkup)... so needless to say my induction got kinda screwed. - I also got 93032349 times to hear "You don't need to diet!" Guess what... NOT DIETING. I'm trying to break my chip/pretzel/pizza/bread snacking habits and if I lose weight, then horray, if not, at least my diet will be healthier and I'll FEEL better! - my nurse with burrito breath didn't seem to care much about my answer. :catfight So... we're going to "take the weekend off" and let my body situate, and start on a clean induction on monday morning. I'm still up for the exercise challenges though! (Although i'll admit, today I'm MAJORLY slacking because work was ROUGH, but I'll get them in before bed tonight!! :-):dancing1

  • Net carbs in Shrimps???
  • Hi! i had shrimps yesterday and entered it in FITDAY. To my suprise Fitday registered 19 carbs for 1 cup of gumbo shrimps!!! I don't understand, i thought shrimps were a food that we could eat liberally. ( PS: i could not find shrimps in the carb counter section of the book). Your feedback is greatly appreciated! Thanks and Happy 4th to all! Amaranda

  • Making Adjustments - Think it'll help?
  • So, I just posted most of this info in another thread (because this site asks that newbies post there first) but it looks like there are more folks hangin' out in this forum, and I'd really like some feedback so I'm posting here too :) My big question is.. Has anyone made adjustments to their program after weeks of no loss? Did it help? Here's some info about me and the adjustments I'm making: I am Female, 38 years old, 5'3, 204 pounds as of last Saturday. Six and a half years ago I lost 60 pounds on Atkins in about 4 months. That time, I went from 190 lbs to 130 lbs. I was a size small size 8 (fit into some size 6 too) I kept it off for about 3 1/2 years. Then (after a stormy break up with a man who was very watchful of my weight I might add) I started eating very non-Atkins-friendly foods. It was kind of like "well the relationship ended in disaster, but at least now I can eat a big bowl of pasta without getting yelled at) I probably gained 40-50 pounds the first year, then another 25-35 over the next 2 1/2 years. And here I am. 204 pounds. I can hardly believe it. 4 1/2 weeks ago I went back on Atkins and lost nothing in 4 weeks BUT I didn't do it as "clean" as I did 6 1/2 years ago. This time I didn't give up caffeine, I over-did it on the cheese, I didn't eat multiple smaller meals (just big dinners), and I was hardly drinking any water. SOOOOOOO as of yesterday, I have made some adjustments - No coffee, no cream, no cheese, eat at least 2 times during the day, and drink at least 85 ounces of water per day. I am going to stay on induction for at least another 2 weeks since I didn't lose anything the first four weeks. I hope these adjustments mak a difference. Fingers crossed!

  • OOoopsie questions - Mine came out wrong
  • I was hoping to enjoy French toast or a "sandwich" by making oopsie rolls. The batter was thin and there more like a quiche. I don't know what I did wrong, so if anyone has tips, please help me out here. I need "BREAD"!

  • Questions...
  • Hi there! My hubby and I just started the diet a few days ago on the recommendation of my doctor (who says I'm pre-diabetic/Hypoglycemic). I have a situation however - I usually eat 4-5 small meals a day because of my job. I own a dog walking/pet sitting business and thus am out in the heat during the summer for 6-7 hours a day with intense exercise. Not complaining about that of course! The issue is - I can't eat a heavy lunch (makes me downright ill with the heat and exercise) and its difficult to bring snacks along that might spoil in the car (I'm thinking of getting a cooler for this too, but not sure how that would work). So any suggestions here on light snacks or whatever would be appreciated. Also - I've been having these terrible headaches and being tired as ****. I drink 2 - 1 liter bottles of water while I"m out during the day (used to drink Gatorade too, but cut it out of my routine when I started since it has a lot of sugar), and at least 3-4 26 ounce glasses at home. I don't drink soda as I get kidney stones, so I'm strictly a water drinking person. I also don't do coffee, tea etc, never have been addicted to that stuff. :) My diet thus far has been. -6:30 am Omelettes in the morning (I add 2oz of cheese, some mushrooms and green pepper, sometimes bacon, and cook it in butter). -9:30 am Black Olives (10) Snack -11:30 am Chicken breast (or something simliar and small before leaving for 'work') -2:30 pm Black Olives or 2 Oz cheddar cheese for snack -7:00 pm Meat for dinner with 1 cup of veggies -Sometimes a snack of cheese, veggies or something similar before bed (but not all of the time). I know its supposed to be rough the first week (my mom did this too and had the same issues), but I just want to make sure that I'm not skipping something. And yes - I'm getting the book today (the doctor handed me a pamplet to get started with), and will be reading it! Thank you!

  • Hi, newbie question here
  • Hi guys and girls Cracking site here, Nice to see everyone helping each other. Got a quesiton, What I would like to do is do the induction phase for maybe 3-4 weeks for the initial weight loss then quit atkins and go on a low fat diet, Is that a really bad idea? How would my body react? Thanks in advance

  • Question ?
  • Hi all Just a quick question, as i am only into the 2nd day of my induction i wanted to ask? If for instance i have had no veggies / salad one day could i make up my 20 gram carb in other ways as in 1 tin of chopped tomatoes with maybe a red and yellow pepper chopped into it? Also, i have not been really hungry to be honest but have tried to eat abit, like today i had: 3 boiled eggs for breakfast and green tea. then fresh chopped tomato, lettuce, red onion and 1 tin of tuna in sunflower oil with a little grated cheese For dinner tonight im planning on having cooked chicken with veggies, Thanks Claire:)

  • traveling
  • I am having to travel this weekend for 5 days (Ok a little more than the weekend). Any tips? I worry that I won't have acess to meats and cheeses. More so, I'm worried i'm going to go nutty and eat. My MIL drives me to anxious places! Oh, and I am going to face three "family parties" (ie food fests) and eating out at restraunts. and tips would be great

  • Confused about UK/US foods!
  • Hey :) I introduced myself a while ago on the spotlight (?) and am just having a good look around for ideas etc. One thing that I'd definiteley say was confusing me is that I'm from the UK and I don't want to go wrong by using our version of US products (I hope this makes sense)!! For example, when you say cream cheese, what exactly do you mean? Could I use cottage cheese or Philedelpia? Also, I work late sometimes (3-11pm) and although I will have breakfast and lunch at home, I always struggle and get too hungry at work so I cave! What snack-type things are acceptable from UK shops? I have a some pepperami, and have heard about babybel... Can someone please clarify for me? Like I said in my introduction, please excuse me if I'm being clueless  Many thanks xxxx

  • End of Day 14!!!!
  • I am so proud of myself. I can't believe I finished this induction clean as a whistle (well a whistle that's never been used, who came up with that saying? lol) I have no idea how much I've lost since last week. I'm so excited tomorrow is weigh day for me. I'm expecting the worst (no loss) and hoping for the best (more than I expected). Either way, I'm feeling so successful. I had this one pair of swim shorts that I bought a few weeks ago that I thought would fit me (I so had no idea how big I really was) and when I tried them on I couldn't even get the snaps to get within several inches of one another. Today I tried them on and they fit, they closed, all the way with room in the waist! To me that speaks volumes, so I am not all about the scale, just curious. I plan on staying on extended induction for a little longer because a) not bored at all by the food b) because it's simple and easy to understand and c) I'm still trying to find out ways to eat all I'm supposed to now. I know it's been 2 weeks, but I still consider myself a newbie, and I just wanna figure out how my body is before I take the next step. I haven't even started working out yet (aside from swimming a couple days a week and household chores) so after I get into the groove of things I'll move on to OWL. I'm soooooooo happy!:dancing1 Sorry to ramble...... OH and thank you to everyone here for all the support. I think that being here has played a huge roll in my success thus far. :oha:ROCKS!!!

  • Good "Snack" ideas...
  • Ok... so we're doing a River Trip on saturday (Float down the river for about 7 hours). Aside from packing some baggies of veggies, what are some other things (INDUCTION FRIENDLY) that I could bring? We'll have a cooler, so things kept cold will work, but I won't be able to heat anything, and it'll need to keep for at least several hours. No Beer for me this trip! It's going to be.... interesting... watching 20 other people get sloshed, and being the one laughing and taking pics! Thanks in advance guys! I'll be scouring the recipe sites until saturday!

  • Which Atkins Book Is Good For Me & Where Can I Buy Ketone Strips The Cheapest?
  • I am feeling like the "Queen Of Questions" on here, LOL. I did Atkins almost 6 years ago, and dont remember having a book that I read. I ordered this kit off of TV that had a VHS tape and came with Ketosis strips. What book is right for me? I have heard of people that follow the Atkins Diet Revolution book, but that isnt even on the Atkins webite. The closest book to the one that I need that I can find on the Atkins website is Atkins For Life. Is the Diet Revolution book better, and if so, what year did it come out? I am going to end up getting the book off of ebay since it will be alot cheaper. Also, about how much do a pack of 100 keotone strips cost? I will probably try to get those off of ebay as well, and I need to know about how much they go for. Thanks.

  • Question About 1/2 lb Weight Gain
  • Okay. I have been on induction one solid week as of yesterday. I have steady been losing weight, but was dismayed to see that I actually have gained 1/2 lb. since yesterday. I have ruled out some things that could have caused the weight gain (not to offer too much information but I have ruled out it being my TOTM or needing to go to the restroom). Is this normal for weight to fluctuate like this on induction, and to actually gain weight? I know its only a 1/2 lb., but I want to make sure that I am doing everything right. I did nothing yesterday "bad" and have been following the diet. I was just surprised that not only did I not lose any, but I actually gained. I have a very accurate scale. Thank you. PS) I know that some people say that when dieting you should only weigh yourself once a week, but it REALLY helps me to weigh myself once a day. It helps me keep up the good work and stay focused. Just to be safe, even though we are allowed 24 ounces of diet soda a day, I have cut it out altogether, though I was drinking a small amount each day all along.
